My gun liked 70 grs.3f goex,.440 rb,.015 pillow ticking,and crisco for lube.It shot 1-1/4" groups @ 100 yds. from sand bag rest. Hunting load was 90 grs.goex w/Lee minie bullet.I did a sort of "halfway house" by milling the slots, but then cutting the dovetails with a three square file with one face ground off.. The bit that gave me nightmares was brazing on the bayonet bar and sling lug.. i used the last of my "old" silver solder on the bar, but had to use new stuff on the sling lug.They shoot most accuretly if the clearance is .003 or less. That's a pretty snug fit and can be pretty hard to load in a fouled bore. The original Minie' bullet to bore fit could be all over the map and it was usually rather loose so accuracy suffered and for the most part the military didn't care.Weighs just over 8lbs, so it's quite handy for a double barrel gun. Barrel swivel detents are nice and solid. Seems in decent shape overall. Historically the very short barreled smooth bores would have been thought of as blanket guns to be hidden under a blanket for defense or a surprise assault. The canoe gun is a modern term for a short barreled gun that might have been used in a canoe.Then forge you out a simple strap staple from a coat hanger or 1/8th inch wire. Pre-drill a couple of undersized holes and tap the staple in. Won't effect the value of this horn one bit! Use a little gun bluing or browning to take the new made off of your staple. Some builders that try to recreate specific longrifles as exactly as possible try to use the same type of mechanism as the original rifle they are copying, even if the mechanism is hidden. The photos below show one of the famous mahogany stocked rifles by Haines. The rifle I am using for inspiration is #81 shown in RCA vol 1. This is the most common cause of cap jams. I use a hard arkansas stone on the face of the hammer to smooth it.
